What Is Pelvic Health Physical Therapy?

Pelvic health physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that addresses various conditions in the pelvic region, which may significantly impact an individual's quality of life.

Our team at Independence Health System aims to alleviate these issues through effective treatment strategies. We treat a wide range of pelvic conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Anal/rectal pain
  • Constipation
  • Gender-affirming care
  • Incontinence
  • Male pelvic pain and incontinence
  • Overactive bladder
  • Pelvic pain/pressure
  • Prenatal and postpartum pain
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy

For women experiencing pelvic pain specifically due to childbearing, we offer targeted exercises and treatments. These include the following and more:

  • Prenatal exercises during pregnancy
  • Treatment for aching backs and joints during pregnancy (exercise and aquatic therapy)
  • Postpartum exercises to regain abdominal/pelvic floor muscle tone
  • Post-cesarean section abdominal retraining and scar management
  • Perineal manual treatment of scars and trigger points following vaginal delivery

Benefits of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

  • Pain Relief: Exercises and manual therapy will help target painful areas.
  • Muscle Retraining: Using Biofeedback will help teach your body how to contract/relax muscles.
  • Restore and Improve Muscle Function: This helps to strengthen and/or relax muscles to decrease episodes of urinary and bowel dysfunction as well as symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Increase Quality of Life: Enjoy traveling, exercise, intercourse and social activities without fear.

What to Expect at Pelvic Floor Therapy

At your first therapy visit, the assessing therapist will ask you specific questions about your medical and personal history to develop a greater understanding of your condition and goals. All sessions are held in a private room.

The therapist will perform a full musculoskeletal assessment focusing on the mobility and strength of your hips, legs, spine and abdomen. The therapist will then perform an internal assessment. The internal examination helps to identify muscle strength, tension, pain and prolapse. As always, we work with what you are comfortable with. The information gathered from your external and internal assessment helps to determine the cause and potential treatments for your specific concerns. From here, you and your therapist will collaborate to develop a therapy plan that utilizes exercise, manual therapy and modalities to help to relieve your symptoms.
