Nursing at Independence Health System: Meet Mackenzie

Mackenzie Sendro, BSN, RNMeet Mackenzie Sendro, BSN, RN at Independence Health System. She's been with the health system for 10 years and is currently working in the GI Lab at Latrobe Hospital.

"Working in the GI lab, we do a number of procedures. We assist gastroenterologists in performing colonoscopies, endoscopies and ERCPs to name a few. We also do infusion nursing in our unit, so we often see patients for blood transfusions and other medications. The nurses are also responsible for the pre-op and post-op care of all of our GI patients. The role of a GI lab nurse also includes assessments, medication reconciliation and IV placement.

My career path started with working in a Primary Care office as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I was accepted to nursing school to complete my Registered Nurse degree. I then worked on Postpartum and Labor and Delivery before coming to the GI lab. The tuition reimbursement program from the health system helped me to further my nursing education and career.

My favorite part of my job is interacting with many different people and helping them to feel at ease when there are there. I also enjoy building relationships with my infusion patients who need to come for regular treatments. My coworkers are also wonderful; working alongside them makes the day flow smoothly and makes for an all around better work environment."
